An online referral program can significantly increase website traffic and business
It has always been said, the best (and cheapest!) way to attract customers to any business is by existing customers referring their friends and colleagues. Referrals, as they are known, arrive after being recommended, they already anticipate you business is of use to them, after all their friend whom they know and trust said so. Offline bricks and mortar businesses have been utilising this marketing technique to great effect for years - web based internet referral marketing programs work just as well.
There are a number of different guises a marketing referral program may appear in, there are a number of different strategies referral programs can be implemented in. A full blown affiliate program is one end of the scale, however referral programs can also be applied on a different basis, to suit smaller businesses (everything else in between is possible too!).
To illustrate how simple a referral marketing program could work, which is applicable to small and medium size business, pages throughout your website may have an attractive button which leads to a input form, the form would request a few simple details such as names and email addresses, on completion by the referrer an email can be generated to the person being referred recommending the site and suggesting they visit. The beauty of this, is that the email generated and sent comes from their friend whom they know and trust, thereby avoiding any negative connotations associated with spam. Best of all, this type of marketing is extremely cheap and low risk.
Of course, the above example is an extremely simple overview, it's possible to integrate this with a database to use down the track for email marketing, it's possible to offer incentives to people willing to refer friends, it's possible to gain referrals not just from people passing through your site, but by third parties referring visitors from their website. Like a lot of things, it boils down to what is right for your business, how should a referral program be tailored to suit your needs.
